Fig. 01 — Balboa Island, Newport Beach, California
(a)
A waterfront house on the bay, designed as a sequence of open, light-filled rooms that all resolve toward the harbor.
The material palette is deliberately restrained — travertine, pale rift oak, honed stone, and glass — so that daylight and the water become the ornament. Millwork carries the detail: slatted screens, floating vanities, integrated lighting.
Furnishings stay low and soft against the architecture, with curved seating and quiet textiles balancing the rigor of the plan. The floating stair anchors the center of the house, lit from within its treads.
